She PowHer Menstrual Cup FAQ’s

WHAT IS A MENSTRUAL CUP?

It is a comfortable, safe and reusable alternative to sanitary pads and tampons. The gentle silicone material is worn internally and collects menstrual fluid instead of absorbing it like a pad or tampon.

CAN ANYONE USE THE SHE POWHER MENSTRUAL CUP?

Yes! There are 3 different sizes S, M, L.

The different sizes accommodate girls on their very first period, those using a menstrual cup for the first time, or older women who have been menstruating for longer.

CAN I LOSE MY VIRGINITY USING A MENSTRUAL CUP?

No. You cannot lose your virginity using a She PowHer menstrual cup.

CAN I WEAR A SHE POWHER CUP IF I’M A VIRGIN?

Yes. It is safe to use the cup if you have not had penetrative sex. It may take a little more practice for girls who have just started menstruating due to the unfamiliarity of their female anatomy. Remember that it will become easier with practice.

CAN I LOSE MY VIRGINITY USING A MENSTRUAL CUP?

No. You cannot lose your virginity using a She PowHer menstrual cup.

CAN THE SHE POWHER CUP GET LOST INSIDE ME?

No.  At the end of the vaginal canal is the cervix, which is the opening to the uterus. It cannot go further than the vaginal canal due to the tiny opening of the cervix. The stem on the cups makes it easy to locate the cup in your vaginal canal.

CAN THE SHE POWHER CUP GET STUCK?

If the cup is stuck and you cannot reach it – DO NOT WORRY— it cannot go anywhere. Use your muscle as though you are pushing to take a bowel movement and your muscle will cause the cup to shift lower to where you can reach it either at the base or stem. Once you can reach the stem of the cup, keep pushing with your stomach muscles and gently pull the stem down until you can reach the base of the cup, then pinch the base to break the seal and remove it. See removal guide

CAN I GO TO THE BATHROOM FOR A BOWEL MOVEMENT WITH A SHE POWHER CUP IN?

Yes. The cups do not inhibit any normal functions. If you find that your cup moves down from having a bowel movement, it can be pushed back up into place.

CAN THE BLOOD AND MENSTRUAL FLUID BACKFLOW?

No. The cervix is an exit only. Your flow cannot go back inside the uterus or other areas of the body.  The cup will collect all the menstrual fluid.

DOES IT SMELL?

Unlike sanitary pads and tampons that absorb menstrual fluid, the menstrual cup collects the menstrual fluid and there is little-to-no smell, provided you follow the recommended guidelines to empty your cup at least once in 10 to 12 hours or more regularly with a heavy flow.

HOW DO I KNOW WHICH SIZE SHE POWHER CUP WILL FIT?

SHE POWHER CUP GUIDELINE:

SMALL: For first time menstruators, approximately age 9 to 15 years/ light flow

MEDIUM: 15 to 25 years (no childbirth)/ light-medium flow

LARGE: 25+ years (had childbirth)/ medium-heavy flow

CAN I TRIM THE STEM OF THE SHE POWHER CUP OR CUT IT OFF?

Feel free to trim the stem to suit your comfort. Before trimming please ensure that you still have sufficient grip and length to comfortably insert and remove the cup. If you do have a short cervix and do not need the stem then you can cut the entire stem off, however, before cutting it off completely make sure that you will not need the stem, that you have a short cervix and that you would always be able to reach the base of the cup. Do what is most comfortable for YOU.

HOW DO I KNOW IF THE SHE POWHER CUP IS INSERTED CORRECTLY?

If the cup is inserted correctly, then you will experience no leakages or discomfort. The cup should feel snug and comfortable with no extreme protruding from the vagina. If there is leakage, gently pinch the base of the cup, remove it and reinsert, or as a rule of thumb – after insertion take a finger and feel around the base of the cup for any dents or signs that the cup has not fully opened up. If this is the case, then either twist the cup 360 degrees holding the base, or try insertion again.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I EMPTY THE SHE POWHER CUP?

The recommended guidelines are:

For Light/Medium Flow: Every 10 to 12 hours, your cup must be removed, emptied and rinsed.

For Heavier Flow: Every 4 to 6 hours, remove your cup, empty and rinse.

IS REMOVAL OF THE SHE POWHER CUP PAINFUL?

If done correctly, removal is not painful. Refer to our removal guide.

CAN I USE MY SHE POWHER CUP WHILE PLAYING SPORT AND EXERCISING?

Yes. You can participate in all activities with the greatest peace of mind that you will be leak free and comfortable, provided that you have inserted the cup correctly. The cup is your invisible confidence.

CAN I USE THE SHE POWHER CUP AT NIGHT WHILE I SLEEP?

Yes. Just make sure that you empty the cup before you go to bed. This will give you a fresh cup with full capacity at the start of your night. Most people use menstrual cups because of the peace of mind it gives them for prolonged hours.

CAN I USE MY SHE POWHER CUP WHILE HAVING SEX?

No. It cannot be used when engaging in penetrative sex, nor can it be used as a contraceptive.

CAN I WEAR IT ALL DAY WITHOUT REMOVING IT?

Your flow will help you determine how often to empty your cup. Typically, a maximum of 12 hours is the recommended time to empty your cup, however, if your flow is heavy then you may need to change it every 2-4 hours. Once you use your cup a few times, you will be able to judge from the filling rate of the cup to how often you will need to empty it.

HOW DO I EMPTY MY SHE POWHER CUP IN A PUBLIC TOILET?

If you need to empty your cup in a public toilet, don’t worry. Simply take out the cup, empty the menstrual fluid into the toilet, wipe the cup with toilet paper, make sure the holes around the cup are not clogged with blood. Once cleaned, pop it back in and continue your day and wash it once you have access to clean water.

CAN I GET AN ALLERGIC REACTION TO THE SHE POWHER CUP?

No. She PowHer menstrual cups are hypoallergenic and have undergone rigorous international testing to ensure no vaginal irritation.

DO I NEED TO BOIL MY SHE POWHER CUP BETWEEN CYCLES?

Yes. We advise boiling your cup for 3-5 minutes between each menstrual cycle to keep it fresh and clean. Make sure the holes at the top are free from any blockages and ensure that you clean in and around the holes as well as the entire cup. See our cleaning guide.

SHOULD I CLEAN MY CUP DURING MY PERIOD?

Yes. We strongly advise you to always clean your cup with water before insertion during your period, or when you do not have access to water, to then wipe it clean with toilet paper until you can wash your cup.

DO I NEED TO USE DETERGENTS OR BLEACH TO CLEAN MY CUP?

No. All you need to clean your cup is boiling water before your cycle and clean water during your cycle. DO NOT use bleach, any detergents, fragranced soaps, oil-based soaps, rubbing alcohol, baking soda and so forth on the cup, as the cup may be damaged or cause serious health risks if any harsh chemicals enter your body. For a thorough clean, boil the cup for 5 minutes.

IS IT NORMAL FOR THE STEM TO POKE ME?

If you find that the stem is sticking out and hurting, you then you can either push the cup higher into the vaginal canal or trim the stem. Do whatever is most comfortable for you.

IS THE STEM SUPPOSED TO BE OUTSIDE OR INSIDE?

The stem can either be completely inside you or completely out – there is no right or wrong, it’s just a matter of what feels more comfortable for you.

CAN I URINATE WITH MY CUP?

Yes. The cup will not hinder you from urinating as the cup sits in the vaginal canal and not the urethra.

HOW LONG WILL MY CUP LAST?

Typically, your cup will last up to ten years with proper care due to the durability of the silicone material. Follow the cleaning guide.

HOW DOES A CUP FIT INSIDE?

Due to the variety of folds, this makes insertion of the cup easy. The smallest insertion point folds are the push-down fold and the seven-fold, which will make insertion easier and less intimidating. Make sure to fold your cup tightly and firmly grasp it while inserting it – this prevents the cup from unfolding.

SHOULD I FEEL ANY PAIN?

No. There should be ZERO pain when inserting, removing and while using the cup. Follow our guide to ensure you are doing everything correctly.

WHAT ARE THE SMALL HOLES FOR?

The air holes are to help remove the suction during removal that was formed when the cup was inserted into the vaginal canal, and it also plays a role in creating the vacuum itself.

CAN YOU GET TOXIC SHOCK SYNDROME FROM SHE POWHER MENSTRUAL CUP?

It is possible, however, it is highly unlikely because it can be prevented by ensuring proper cup hygiene by:

  1. Boiling your cup for 3-5 minutes before the start of each cycle.
  2. Do not leave your cup in longer than the 12 hour recommended time.
  3. Always wash your hands before and after insertion and removal.
  4. Cleaning your cup during your cycle and always make sure the small holes are free from any blockages and are well cleaned.
  5. Do not use the cup if you have any current vaginal infections until it has cleared up.
  6. Only use your cup during your cycle and NOT for any other reasons like discharge.
WHAT DO I DO IF I FEEL LIKE CONSTANTLY URINATING?

Change the position of the cup by pushing the cup in more horizontally towards the tailbone. The silicone is gentle and will not cause pain or injury if done correctly, so do not worry.

HOW DOES THE CUP STAY IN PLACE?

The cup stays in place due to the suction seal/vacuum that is formed when the cup is inserted into the vagina.

CAN I USE LUBRICANT TO HELP WHEN INSERTING MY CUP?

Yes. A small amount of lubricant can be added to the rim of the folded cup for easier insertion. Alternatively, water is the best natural lubricant so after cleaning your cup there is no need to wipe the water off but do make sure there is no water left inside of the cup itself.

HOW HIGH SHOULD MY CUP BE?

A menstrual cup generally sits lower than a tampon does, however, you can wear your cup as high or as low as you are comfortable with. Whether the cup is positioned high or low, as long as your cup has been inserted correctly, then you are good to go.

HOW CAN I PREVENT MY CUP FROM STAINING?

Ensure to ALWAYS boil your cup before each cycle and wash your cup thoroughly during your cycle. DO NOT use bleach.

WILL MY CUP LEAK IF I HAVE A VERY ACTIVE LIFESTYLE?

No. If your cup has been inserted correctly then a seal should form and the cup will be fully opened, thus ensuring no leakages.

CAN I SWIM WHILE WEARING A CUP?

Yes, it is completely safe. If your cup has been inserted correctly, there should be no leaks.

WHAT IF I’VE NEVER INSERTED ANYTHING INTO MY VAGINA?

At first, you may need a few trial runs, but once you get to know your body and practice with the cup, you will soon be confident and a pro! Don’t be intimidated because the cup cannot hurt you – it will just take some time to get the hang of it. Remember, practice makes perfect.

WHEN SHOULDN’T I USE MY CUP?

You should not use your cup when you have any vaginal infections, postnatal bleeding, during sexual intercourse and for any other purposes other than menstruation.

CAN A CUP PROTECT ME FROM PREGNANCY?

No. Your cup is not a contraceptive device.
